To Bank or Not to Bank?

We are faced with a decision: Do we bank this baby's cord blood?

While I've done some research and read some studies on this procedure, I've not come to a real defining "yes" or "no" decision. Really the sad fact is that it all boils down to money. It is quite expensive and a life-long choice to pay a yearly storage fee on the cord blood. If I was made of money, I'd do it. I mean it can't hurt.

I'm interested in others opinions either if you have done it, thought about it, or haven't done it.

I'd like to hear some feedback from someone other than the internet or the sales rep trying to sell it to me.

I have never heard of this? Is this a new thing? I will have to do some research.

You know our thoughts on it! :) We banked both Mackenzie and Josiah's cord blood. No, we are not made of money. I guess we viewed it as an insurance policy...we hope we never need it, but if we do need it and did not have it...well, we just decided it was a priority for us. We opted to pay in full (18 years of storage) up front in order to receive an additional discount as well as to not have annual payments. Anyway. Stem cell research is huge and promising on a number of levels. No, I don't mean aborted fetus' stem cells...they are also found in the cord blood at birth and in adult bone marrow, for instance. Pretty amazing how those cells can differentiate (sp?) into any type of cell, like heart, pancreatic, brain, etc. Who knows? Good luck with your decision!

Be aware that donating the cord blood is also an option. We chose to donate Alex's cord blood. It costs nothing, and we figured there was a greater chance to be able to help someone.

Ryan,
Donating the cord blood is definitely an option we are considering. I think it is a great idea!

We did not do this when Anna was born but with her recent illness it crossed my mind a time or two - should we have done that?? I really do not know what to tell you. I have heard that it is expensive to do but I have not done any research on it.
I do like the idea of donating it. There are so many sick children who are in need.
Good luck!

Although we did not do it with either of our girls (financially we could not), I think it is an awesome gift for your baby.

I'm all for it! Good luck with your decision.

I think that it would be a great thing if we too were made of money, but for me to stay home and take care of the kids, we decided to opt out of this. Of course, we never even had this option except with Parker and he was born in such a little town (Graham) it was going to cost even more to have everything done....so that pretty much sealed the deal.
There are some great options out there. We just pray that our children never need cord blood.
Hope that you are feeling great!!

We donated both Kalista's and Isaac's as we couldn't afford to bank, but wanted to be able to help someone else.

We banked Lexi's at it was sooo easy! I felt very srongly about it and I would give anything if I would have done it with Easton. Our doctor told us that it is one of the best and cheapest insurance policies that you can ever get. Pretty cool! Let me know what you decide:)
