Got Something to Say

Lately, I've been thinking about commitment.

I guess my students spurred these thoughts. They rarely give me a straight answer; it is always, "I don't know," not an resounding "yes" or "no."

I no longer accept an answer that isn't straightforward.

Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:37, "But let your statement be, `Yes, yes' or `No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil." That is empowering!

Many people often fail to give firm answers. I hear myself and others say, "That might work," "Maybe I can come," "It is a possibility" when we really mean, "No." When we don't give definitive answers, we wind up over-committing ourselves to lots of "maybes" in an effort to please people.

My prayer is to be a person and parent who is decisive and upfront with my family and friends.

I pretty much agree with a lot of what you said, Sara.

It's possible that I may try to be more definitive in the future.

Here's a decisive statement: I love you. Happy Valentine's Day!
